Wrenze Steel provides steel quantity take-off and cost estimation for contractors, fabricators and consultants in the UAE and the GCC. We measure the steel from tender drawings, design drawings or a 3D model and report the tonnage, plates, bolts and other items in a form you can price. When the design is not complete, we carry out a preliminary design during the bidding stage, so your price is based on the minimum realistic weight and fabrication cost.
What the steel quantity take-off includes
- Main members by section size, grade and length: columns, beams, rafters, trusses and bracing
- Secondary steel: purlins, side rails, sag rods, stairs and handrails
- Plates, stiffeners and connection material
- Bolts and anchor bolts by size and grade
- Stated allowances for connections and details not yet designed
- Surface areas for coating, where needed
- A bill of quantities (BOQ) in your format, broken down by building, zone or member type
Take-off from drawings or a 3D model
From 2D drawings we measure each member and record its section, length and weight. From a Tekla Structures or Advance Steel model, quantities come straight from the model reports, which also lets us check the model itself. On the Emirates Pavilion at Expo 2020 our scope included model review as well as the take-off.
Preliminary design at the bidding stage
Tender drawings often show only the architecture, or a design that will change. In those cases we size the main members with a preliminary design, using the same principles as our full structural steel design: hot-rolled sections where they work, simple connections and fabrication-friendly details. This gives a steel structure estimation you can price against, and a clear view of where the design could be lighter.
Steel cost estimation
Alongside quantities, we prepare cost estimates of the steel package for clients who need them, using the rates and cost basis agreed with you. The report lists each assumption, so estimators can adjust it to their own fabrication and erection costs.
Related projects
For the Expo 2020 Emirates Pavilion, we carried out the steel take-off, quantity survey, cost estimation and model review for Emirates Airline, with WME as consultant and Cimolai Rimond Middle East JV QA as contractor. We also prepared the modelling and quantity survey for the Angola Pavilion and the rocket frame of the USA Pavilion. For Dubai Municipality we designed and estimated the cost of 31 sheds in the Dubai Fruit and Vegetable Market, and for Al Ajmi Engineering Consultants we designed the Dubai Industrial City workshop and mezzanine, including its quantity survey.
