Good design can still go wrong on site. A missing brace, a loose bolt group or a frame erected out of plumb can undo the safety margins in the calculations. Our site supervision puts a steel engineer on site to check that the structure is fabricated and erected as designed, and to answer site queries quickly so the work keeps moving. We supervise steel structures in Dubai and across the UAE, for steel we designed and for steel designed by others.
What site supervision covers
At the fabrication shop
- Member sizes, grades and marks checked against the approved shop drawings
- Plate, hole and connection details checked on sample pieces before the full run
- Visual weld checks and review of the fabricator’s test certificates and inspection records
- Surface preparation and paint or galvanizing checked against the specification
On site, during erection
- Erection sequence, temporary bracing and stability at every stage
- Bolt grades, tightening and preloading where the design needs it
- Alignment, levels and plumb of columns and frames against the tolerances
- Base plates, grouting and anchor bolts at the foundations
- Bracing, purlins and secondary steel completed before cladding goes on
Reports and close-out
- A written report after each visit, with photographs and actions
- Answers to site queries and requests for information
- Snag lists and the final inspection, with an as-built check of the completed structure
Why supervision by a steel designer
Our supervision team works alongside our structural engineers and detailers, so site checks are made by people who know how steel structures are designed and connected. When something on site does not match the drawings, we can judge quickly whether it is acceptable, needs a fix or needs a redesign, and agree the solution with the designer of record.
Supervision fits naturally after our structural steel design and shop drawings and detailing, but we also supervise steel designed by others. For existing structures, see our structural assessment and strengthening service.
Visual inspection, not testing
We carry out visual inspection of welds, bolts and members. Where the specification calls for non-destructive testing, an independent testing laboratory does that work, and we review its reports as part of the supervision.
How supervision is arranged
- Scope: we review the drawings, the specification and your programme, and agree which stages need a visit.
- Visit plan: full-time supervision, regular visits, or key stages only, depending on the size and risk of the job.
- Visits and reports: each visit ends with a written report and a list of actions.
- Close-out: a final inspection and snag list when the steel is complete.
