Microsoft data center, Virginia, USA

Aerial photo of a Microsoft data center campus under construction in Virginia, USA, with rows of data hall buildings and plant equipment

Project overview

This project is a Microsoft data center campus in Virginia, USA, one of the largest data center markets in the world. Wrenze Steel carried out the full engineering scope listed in our company profile for the client, Microsoft.

The photo shows the campus during construction: rows of large data hall buildings with rooftop and ground-level plant, set on a cleared site with access roads between them.

Our scope

Our scope was full engineering. Working on a project in the United States from our office in Dubai shows how our team delivers remotely: models, calculations and drawings are shared and reviewed online, so the location of the site does not limit the work. We also have a US company, Wrenze Engineering USA LLC, registered in Texas, supporting our projects in the United States.

The structure

Data centers are industrial buildings with unusual demands. The data halls need large, open floor areas for server racks, while the roofs and plant areas carry heavy cooling and electrical equipment. Steel frames and steel roof structures suit these buildings well: they span the halls, carry the plant loads and go up quickly, which matters on a campus built in phases.

Design for this type of building pays close attention to equipment loads and vibration, to platforms and supports for mechanical and electrical plant, and to coordination with the many services that run through the structure.
