Project overview
This project is a juice factory for Domaine de Grissac in France. Wrenze Steel carried out the structural design, working for the project architect, a French architecture practice.
The renders show a low building set into the countryside, with a planted green roof and dark facades. A lorry stands at the loading entrance, and a red sign on the front wall reads Chai de Grissac. The structural model in our profile shows a steel frame of several bays stepping down in height along the building.
Our scope
Our scope was design. We designed the steel frame from the loads and layout set by the architect, producing the structural model, member design and connections.
The project shows that our work is not limited to the UAE. Because structural design is done on computer models and drawings, our team can design a building in Europe from our office in Dubai. In France, structural design follows the Eurocodes, which are among the design codes our team works with every day.
The structure
A factory needs open floor space. Production lines, tanks and the movement of goods all work best with few internal columns, so the frame is arranged to keep the floor as clear as the spans allow.
The stepped roof follows the architecture and the different heights needed for different parts of the process. Each change in roof level creates a line where frames of different heights meet, and those junctions need their own connections and stability checks.
A green roof is heavy. Soil, drainage layers and plants add a large permanent load, and that load increases when the soil is saturated after rain. The roof beams are sized for the wet weight, and deflection is kept small so that water drains as intended rather than ponding.
Industrial buildings also carry equipment loads. Pipework, ducts and plant are often hung from the roof structure, and their positions need to be agreed early so the steel can take them.
