Project overview
This project was a wedding event at Ain Dubai on Bluewaters in Dubai. Wrenze Steel provided design and management for the event structures, working for Out of The Box L.L.C as client and consultant.
The photos show a large outdoor venue by the water. Rows of ornate arched pavilions in red and gold surround a lawn, with domed structures, decorated columns and lit trees. At night the pavilions are lit from inside, with the city skyline behind.
Our scope
Our scope was design and management.
Design covered the structures that hold the venue up: the frames behind the arches and domes, their bases and their stability against wind. Decorative event structures look light, but they are often large, they are open to the weather and they stand among crowds of guests, so they need proper engineering.
Management reflects how event work runs. The build window is short, many trades work at once and changes happen late. Engineering has to keep pace, answering questions as they come and checking changes before they are built.
The structure
Temporary event structures face the same physics as permanent ones, with less time to get them right.
Wind is the main concern. Open pavilions and tall decorative elements catch wind, and a waterfront site is exposed. Each structure needs a clear way to resist overturning and sliding.
Foundations are usually the hardest part. Event sites often cannot be dug into, especially on finished lawns and paving. Structures are then held down by ballast, such as concrete blocks or water weights, or by temporary anchors where the ground allows. The ballast must be sized for the uplift and overturning from wind, and the ground must be able to carry it.
Decoration adds load. Fabric, panels, lighting and ornament all hang from the frames, and their weight and the wind they catch must be included.
Guests are close to every structure, so stability is checked for people leaning on or brushing against columns and balustrades as well.
