Project overview
The USA Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai displayed a full-height rocket as one of its features. Wrenze Steel carried out the modelling and quantity surveying of the rocket’s steel support frame for QA Construct Contracting.
Our scope
Our scope was modelling and quantity surveying: building the 3D model of the rocket frame and measuring its steel to give accurate quantities for pricing and fabrication. Our drawings for the job show the frame in plan and elevation, with the support layout at its base.
The structure
The model shows a tall, slender lattice frame standing on splayed legs. A frame like this behaves like a small tower: it carries the weight of what it supports and, outdoors, the wind on both the frame and the object it holds, all brought down to a compact base.
Slender lattice frames need accurate geometry. Every chord, diagonal and leg meets at a node, and small errors in setting out add up over the height. Modelling the frame in 3D before fabrication fixes the geometry, gives exact member lengths and quantities, and shows how the legs and base plates sit on the foundations.
This was part of our wider Expo 2020 work. See our steel quantity take-off service or request a quote.
